K-12 Education

The Center for Rural Culture has supported the Hand to Hand/Farm to Table program at Byrd Elementary School for the past decade. This year this program is expanding to include all 5th graders at BES and a Culinary Arts students in classes 1 and 2 at Goochland High School. The program has grown to include the traditional trip to Shalom Farms for hands on planting and harvesting activities and the year end overnight outdoor camping experience at Westview on the James. This experience offers teaching stations on canning, blacksmithing, planting, outdoor education, and  farming.

Teachers at Goochland Public Schools  have partnered in 2019 as a collaborative cross curricula 21st Century Teaching Project. Funds support shirts for the elementary students, transportation to the farm and supplies needed to carry out the projects.
